Finding A Compatible Remote For Your Raynor Garage Door Opener

Finding a compatible replacement remote for your Raynor garage door opener can be tricky sometimes. There are different styles, button configurations and models that seem to come and go every couple of years. And with those changes there are also differences in radio frequencies that the remotes use so matching up the correct remote to your Raynor opener can be confusing.

Finding the right remote to work with your opener no longer has to be confusing though with the introduction of the Liftmaster 893MAX Remote a few years ago. The 893MAX is a 3-button remote
that can work on 390MHz and 315MHz frequencies and be programmed to work three garage door openers. It is backwards compatible which means it can replace all of the previous models of remotes of which many have been discontinued.

893MAX Liftmaster Remote

As far as a compatible replacement for Raynor garage door openers it will work on all Raynor garage door openers manufactured since 2000. There's a list below of all of the Raynor openers that the 893MAX Remote will work with. If you have an older Raynor Flitestar or R-Series garage door opener then please read our other blog post: Raynor Remotes Part II - Flitestar and R-Series Openers. We cover the different remotes that have been used over the years and how you can find the correct one for your opener.

As mentioned above the 893MAX Remote replaces all of the previous remotes that have been used with the Raynor garage door openers manufactured since 2000. Here is a list of the remotes that the 893MAX remote replaces.

893MAX Remote replaces these models:
81RGD, 83RGD, 971RGD, 972RGD, 973RGD, 974RGD, 371RGD, 372RGD, 373RGD, 374RGD

And here is a list of all of the Raynor garage door openers that the 893MAX Remote is compatible with:

893MAX Remote compatible with these Raynor openers:
  • Admiral (3850RGD), Admiral II (8550RGD), Admiral II WiFi (8550WRGD)
  • Airman (3270RGD), Airman II (8155RGD)
  • Aviator (1280RGD/2280RGD/3280RGD), Aviator II (8355RGD/8355WRGD)
  • Corporal (3255RGD), Corporal II (8165RGD/8165WRGD)
  • Commander (2220RGD/3220RGD), Commander II (3240RGD)
  • Endeavor (2585RGD/3585RGD)
  • General II (WLEDRGD)
  • Pilot (1265RGD/2265RGD/3265RGD), Pilot II (8365RGD/8365WRGD-267)
  • Navigator (1245RGD/2245RGD/3245RGD)
  • Prodigy (3800RGD), Prodigy II (8500RGD/8500WRGD)
  • Sergeant II (8160WRGD)
  • Ultra (2595RGD/3595RGD), Ultra II (8587RGD/8587WRGD)
So if you have an older Raynor garage door opener and you need a compatible replacement remote you can use the 893MAX Remote found here at the Garage Door Zone Store. And if you want a key chain remote then the 890MAX Key Chain Remote can be used or the 877MAX Keyless Entry if you're looking for an outside keypad.

Raynor Remotes Part II - Flitestar & R-Series Openers

Finally, I can address the other Raynor remotes that people ask about. A month or so ago I addressed remote controls for the newer style of Raynor operators (Pilot, Aviator, Commander, etc.). Now I'm going to cover the remotes for the Raynor Flitestar and R-Series (R110/210, R120/220, R130/230, R150/250, R160/260 and R170/270) garage door operators.

First, the radio receiver for the Flitestar and R-Series of operators is not built into the units like the current operators. This means that the installation company or distributor you got the operator from added the receiver when it was installed. This can cause some problems when trying to help customers because there were many different radio receivers on the market 10 or 20 years ago that the installer could have used so I can't cover them all. I will cover the one's we've used and are still available. If you don't see yours below then the receiver & remotes may or may not still be available. The best thing to do is to email us at: store@garagedoorzone.com and I'll try to help you. Please include the make and model number of the radio receiver attached to the opener (you will probably have to remove the receiver and look on the back for this information).

You can also watch the video below that will help explain what information is needed to locate the correct remote for your garage door opener.

Linear Garage Door Opener Remote
Linear - very common in the 1980's to early 90's. This equipment is still being manufactured. If you have a Linear Delta-3 radio receiver then the Linear DT-1 Remote is what you need. There are 8 DIP switches in the remote that are matched up to the 8 switches on the back of the radio receiver. This was good reliable radio equipment and is still being used by some.
Raynor 971RGD Garage Door Opener RemoteRaynor 973RGD Garage Door Opener RemoteRaynor 63RGD Garage Door Opener Remote
Liftmaster - in the late 80's this equipment started to become popular and is probably the most popular radio equipment on the market today. If you have a model #500RGD (500LM) radio receiver then you'll probably have the #61RGD 1-button remote or #63RGD 3-button remote. These remotes are easy to distinguish by the red LED light on them and the 9 trinary DIP switches in the battery compartment. The 61RGD Remotes are no longer available but you can use the 61LM Remote which is the same. The 63RGD also is no longer available but the 33LM Remote is a compatible replacement.
The next model of remotes by Liftmaster to come out were the #81RGD 1-button and #83LM 3-button remotes. These are the 390MHz "Billion Code" style remotes and worked with the #520RGD and #540RGD radio receivers. They eliminated the DIP switches and incorporated the "Smart Button" technology into the #8xx series of remotes making the programming even easier. The 81RGD and 83LM Remotes are no longer available but a compatible replacement remote would be the 893MAX Remote.
The last Liftmaster model that may have been used on the Raynor R-series or Flitestar operators is the #971RGD 1-button or #973RGD 3-button 390MHz Security + rolling code remotes. These were used for a number of years until the 315MHz frequency remote controls came into use. The 971LM Remote can be used as a replacement for the 971RGD Remote and the 893MAX Remote can be used to replace the 973RGD Remote.

There's a few other makes of radio equipment still being manufactured and may have been used on the older Raynor openers. The Multi-Code #308911 1-button 300MHz remote is made by Linear and is compatible with #109920 Multi-Code radio receiver. The Linear GT-30 Remote is a Genie compatible unit that will work with the 390MHz Genie Pro Intellicode radio receivers from 1996 or newer. The GT30 is also compatible with Overhead Door CodeDodger and Linear AM-RGR access control receivers.

This is by no means all of the radio equipment that's was or is available. Some of the older stuff is discontinued and some of it is still manufactured but isn't that popular. If you don't see your remote control then send us an email (store@garagedoorzone.com) with a description of what you are looking for and include some pictures if you can and we'll try and track it down for you or give you some options.

Get the Correct Remote for a Liftmaster or Raynor Door Opener

Below we'll show a simple way to find a replacement garage door opener remote for a Liftmaster, Raynor, Chamberlain or Craftsman garage door opener. Most of the original remotes that came with the operators when they were new have been discontinued but there's still a couple still available. Even if your original remote was discontinued there's a replacement remote available.

If you lost your remote or you just moved into the home and the old homeowners didn't leave any remotes then the following breakdown should help you to determine which remote will work with your operator.

To determine which remote you need you'll need to locate the Learn Button on the operator. Below are small pictures of what the Learn Button on the garage door openers look like and the specific color of the Learn Button will determine what remote will work with them. The Learn Button will either be located on the back or the right side of the unit near the antenna wire. You may have to remove the light cover to see it.

Here's an example of a Yellow Learn Button on a Liftmaster garage door opener:

If your garage door opener has a Green Learn Program Button then it uses the Billion Code Technology and is compatible with the following remotes and keyless entry.

If your garage door opener has a Purple Learn Program Button then it uses the Security+ 315MHz Technology and is compatible with the following remotes and keyless entry.

  • 377LM Wireless Keypad - Obsolete                          use 877MAX Wireless Keypad

If your garage door opener has a Yellow Learn Program Button then it uses the Security+ 2.0 Technology and is compatible with the following remotes and keyless entry.

Compatible Remotes

You can purchase any of the compatible replacement remotes and keypads listed above at the Garage Door Zone store. We hope this helps you in finding the remote you need. If you're still unsure or have a Raynor garage door opener from the 1980's or 1990's that has an external radio receiver or you can't find a Learn Button feel free to email us at Blog@GarageDoorZone.com and we'll try and help you out.

Replacing The Remote For Your Garage Door Opener

It happens. You put the garage door remote in your coat pocket and forget about it. You sell your old vehicle and forget to take the remote out. You drop the remote on the driveway and it breaks into a million pieces. It happens....

The best solution is to buy the exact replacement for the remote you lost or broke. This way you know it will work with your operator. You can find many of the most common replacement remotes here on the Garage Door Zone site. But if you lost it how do you know which one to buy? Look in the garage door operator manual and you'll usually find the compatible remotes listed on one of the last pages of the manual. What if you don't have the manual? You can find many manuals here on the Garage Door Zone Support Site.

So you found the remote you need but also found that it is no longer available. What do you do now? Install a new radio receiver with a new remote. It's a simple set up with only two wires to hook up and is easy to program by just pushing a button. Take a look here at the Linear MegaCode Universal Receiver Set available on the Garage Door Zone site. It includes everything you need to get you up and running again.

Raynor Replaces The Pilot Opener With The Pilot II

Raynor has discontinued the Pilot 1/2 h.p. residential operator and introduced the new Pilot II 1/2 h.p. residential operator. The operator itself looks the same as the old model and is still a 1/2 h.p. chain drive unit but the big difference is that it is now equipped with the MyQ technology. The opener comes packaged with two (2) 893RGX 3-button remotes and one (1) 877 Keyless Entry.

With the new MyQ technology you'll be able to open and close your garage door with your smartphone or computer by adding the 828LM Internet Gateway accessory to the opener. You can also add the 829LM Garage Door Monitor so you can tell if your garage door is open or closed from the comfort of your bedroom (or any room you choose to put the monitor).

With the introduction of the Pilot II opener Raynor now has six residential garage door operators with MyQ technology built into the logic boards: Prodigy II, Ultra II, Admiral II, Aviator II, Pilot II and Corporal II. The Raynor Airman operator is the only operator in the Raynor residential lineup that is not MyQ compatible unless an 888LM MyQ Wall Station is added to the unit.

All of the residential operators currently in the Raynor line up (including the Airman model) can use the 893RGX remote and the 877 Keyless Entry.

Garage Door Question of the Week - How do I change the battery in my remote?

Garage Door Question of the Week - How Do I Change The Battery In My Remote?

Every week we answer common questions about garage doors and garage door operators that we receive in our mailbag. If you have a question please email us at: Support@GarageDoorZone.com.

Q: For the life of me I can't figure out how to open my remote to change the battery. Any tips? - Diane

A: It may seem like a silly question but it is in fact a very good (and common) question. If you have an older (15 - 20 year old) remote then this usually isn't a problem. Most of the older remotes had a screw that you could remove or a small piece that you could slide to get to the battery compartment. This is not the case in most of the newer remotes. I'm assuming in an effort to save on production costs the remotes are no longer made with a screw or a sliding compartment door. What you'll usually find is the two pieces of the remote are pressure fitted together making it difficult to get to the battery. However on most remotes you'll see a small indentation on the end or side of the battery. Take a dime and put it in that indentation and turn the dime like a key. The two halves of the remote should then come apart giving you access to the battery. Two of the more common batteries you'll find is the 3-Volt Lithium Battery or the 12-Volt Alkaline Battery.

Thanks again for the questions. Keep them coming by emailing us at: Support@GarageDoorZone.com or use the Contact Form on the left.

Garage Door Question of the Week - Keyless Entry Instructions - Week 34

Garage Door Question of the Week - Keyless Entry Instructions

Every week we answer common questions about garage doors and garage door operators that we receive in our mailbag. If you have a question please email us at: Support@GarageDoorZone.com.

Q: I need instructions on how to reprogram my keypad remote. It doesn't remember my password any longer and the change password instructions don't work. Where can I find programming instructions? - Tom

A: Great question Tom. We all do it - we buy a new product and throw the instructions in a drawer. Then when you really need them you can't find them. Not to worry though - Garage Door Zone has a Support Site with a lot of different programming instructions and installation manuals (and we're always trying to add more). Visit the Garage Door Zone Support Site and look up the keyless entry, remote or garage door opener you need the instructions for. If you don't see the particular set of instructions you need send us an email (support@GarageDoorZone.com) and we'll try to get it uploaded for you.

Thanks again for the questions. Keep them coming by emailing us at: Support@GarageDoorZone.com or use the Contact Form on the left.

Finding the Right Raynor Opener Remote....

373RGD Raynor Remote
UPDATE: OCTOBER 2014: We wrote the following blog post back in May 2012. Since then a new solution has come about....the 893RGX Remote. We go into some detail in finding the correct replacement remote for your Raynor operator but that is no longer necessary for two reasons: 1. Most of the original remotes are no longer available. 2. The 893RGX Remote replaces all of the previous remotes. So if you have any of the programming (learn) buttons or remotes listed below then all you need is the 893RGX Remote to work with your Raynor operator. If you have a Raynor Flitestar opener or Raynor opener manufactured before 1998 then you should read our other blog post on finding a remote for those model operators (Raynor Remotes - Flitestar & R-Series Openers)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It can be very confusing and downright frustrating for consumers when they need to buy a new remote transmitter for their garage door operator. The garage door industry seems to change the remotes every 5 or 6 years so the older remotes won't work with the newer openers. This can be a real headache trying to figure out which remote goes with which model of opener. Hopefully the following breakdown will help you in determining exactly which remote you need for your Raynor garage door opener.

Before we go any further and get into the nuts and bolts of it here is a simple way to determine which remote you need: look on the back of your existing Raynor remote and you should see (if it hasn't been torn or worn off) the model number of the remote. It will be a 2 or 3 digit number followed by the letters RGD. So for example you may see: 973RGD.....this is the model of the remote and the one you should get to replace it.

If you lost your remote or you just moved into the home and the old homeowners didn't leave any remotes then the following breakdown should help you to determine which remote will work with your operator.

To determine which remote you need you'll need to locate the Learn Button on the operator. The Learn Button will either be located on the back or the right side of the unit near the antenna wire. You may have to remove the light cover to see it.

Green Program Learn Button
If your garage door opener has a Green Learn Program Button then it uses the Billion Code Technology and is compatible with the following remotes and keyless entry.

Compatible Remotes

Orange Learn Program Button

If your garage door opener has an Orange or Red Learn Program Button then it uses the Security+ 390MHz Rolling Code Technology and is compatible with the following remotes and keyless entry.

Compatible Remotes
  • 971RGD Remote (1-button remote)
  • 973RGD Remote (3-button remote)
  • 977LM Keyless (compatible keyless entry)
  • 877MAX Keyless (compatible keyless entry)
  • 890MAX Remote (compatible mini 3-button remote)
  • 893RGX Remote

If your garage door opener has a Purple Learn Program Button then it uses the Security+ 315MHz Technology and is compatible with the following remotes and keyless entry.

Compatible Remotes

If your garage door opener has a Yellow Learn Program Button then it uses the Security+ 2.0 Technology and is compatible with the following remotes and keyless entry.

Compatible Remotes

We hope this helps you in finding the remote you need. If you're still unsure or have any questions feel free to email us at store@garagedoorzone.com

One last note: if you have a Raynor Flitestar opener or an R-Series Opener (R110,R130,R150,R160,R170) then determining which remote you need is a little different and you should read our other blog posts where we cover the remotes for those openers. Raynor Garage Door Opener Remotes - Part I

Raynor Garage Door Operator Remotes
Need a remote for your Raynor garage door opener? If the answer is yes then we need to determine which opener you have first so you can get the correct remotes. The following information is only for these Raynor operators:
  • Pilot 1/2 h.p. opener
  • Navigator 1/3 h.p. opener
  • Endeavor 3/4 h.p. opener
  • Commander 1/2 h.p. opener
  • Aviator 1/2 h.p. opener
  • Ultra 3/4 h.p. opener
Note: if you have a Raynor Flitestar opener or one of the Raynor "R" Series openers (R150, R160, R170) you'll have to wait until I write about those another time or email me if you have a question. There's a lot of information to cover on remotes for those openers that I just can't cover now.
377LM Wireless Keyless Entry
The newest Raynor garage door openers have a radio frequency of 315MHz so the only remotes to work with them will be the number "3" series of remotes - #371LM 1-button Remote, #373RGD 3-button remote and #377LM Wireless Keyless Entry Keypad. You can determine if you need a 315MHz remote by looking on the back of an existing transmitter if you have one. The model number will be stamped on the back. If you don't have a remote then you'll have to look at the powerhead to find the frequency. Look on the back of the powerhead unit on the ceiling (you may have to take the light cover off depending on which model of opener you have). You should see a small square purple button - this is the program button. If you see a purple button then you will need the 315MHz radio transmitters. If you see a red program button then read on.

The slightly older Raynor garage door openers have the same model names as listed above bRaynor Garage Door Opener Remotesut they are 390MHz frequency. If you see a red program button on the back of the powerhead unit then you will need the number "9" series of remotes - #971RGD 1-button Remote, #973RGD 3-button Remote and the new #877MAX Wireless Keyless Entry Keypad which replaces the 976LM Keyless Entry.

That covers the Raynor garage door openers from the past 10 years or so. If you have one of the Raynor openers from the 1980's to late 1990's then you'll have to email us if you have questions (store@garagedoorzone.com) or wait for the next installment when I cover those openers. Those operators didn't have built-in radio receivers from the manufacturer so it was up to the installing dealers to add the radio receiver of which they could add any number of different receivers. I'll cover the receivers we used over the past 20 years and some tips on finding the right remote for you.
