Get the Correct Remote for a Liftmaster or Raynor Door Opener

Below we'll show a simple way to find a replacement garage door opener remote for a Liftmaster, Raynor, Chamberlain or Craftsman garage door opener. Most of the original remotes that came with the operators when they were new have been discontinued but there's still a couple still available. Even if your original remote was discontinued there's a replacement remote available.

If you lost your remote or you just moved into the home and the old homeowners didn't leave any remotes then the following breakdown should help you to determine which remote will work with your operator.

To determine which remote you need you'll need to locate the Learn Button on the operator. Below are small pictures of what the Learn Button on the garage door openers look like and the specific color of the Learn Button will determine what remote will work with them. The Learn Button will either be located on the back or the right side of the unit near the antenna wire. You may have to remove the light cover to see it.

Here's an example of a Yellow Learn Button on a Liftmaster garage door opener:

If your garage door opener has a Green Learn Program Button then it uses the Billion Code Technology and is compatible with the following remotes and keyless entry.

Samy Kamkar, a security researcher, hacked a Mattel toy to scan every possible garage door opener combination and open them in seconds. No need to panic and unplug your operator though. It only works on fixed code receivers and the hacker would also need to know what frequency the receiver was.

If your operator is from approximately 1995 to present then you most likely don't have a fixed code receiver on your opener. Check yours by opening the battery compartment on your remote. If you see DIP switches (that can be moved to + or -) then you have a fixed code otherwise you don't. Operators made over the past 20 years have used a rolling code type of security so this hacked toy would not work on them.

Fixed code was mostly used in the 1970's and 1980's but is still in use today on thousands of garage door openers. I wouldn't be too worried though since Kamkar disabled the code used to hack the toy so someone couldn't copy it. The hacker would also need to know if your garage door opener had a fixed code receiver and the frequency of the receiver.

It's an interesting story and good to be aware of but not something anyone should panic over. There's one way burglars get into garages more than any other way...people leave the garage door open! So if you really want to be safe then close the garage door. Even if you are just working in the yard or in the house it only takes a dishonest person seconds to steal your stuff. If you do have a fixed code receiver on your operator and you're still worried about it then either buy a new garage door operator or upgrade the radio receiver & remote with a secure rolling code receiver like the Liftmaster 365LM Receiver and 371LM Remote.

Install A New Remote On Your Old Garage Door Opener

Liftmaster Plans a Maintenance Outage For MyQ App

If you have a Liftmaster or Raynor garage door operator that is equipped with the 828LM Internet Gateway and use the MyQ app to open and close your garage door using your smart phone or computer be aware that Liftmaster is planning an outage and you won't be able to use the app. The outage is planned for Thursday April 10th at 2:30am (EST) and should last for 2-1/2 hours.

Here's the information from Liftmaster:

This week we will be performing a planned maintenance event to improve the overall performance of the MyQ app. We recently updated the MyQ Android app to deliver faster response times and to build on this, we are making additional upgrades to the rest of our service. The maintenance will be performed Thursday, April 10th during a 2.5 hour window beginning at 2:30 AM (EDT). During the maintenance window you will experience downtime on the LiftMaster MyQ App and should expect the following:

• You will not be able to open or close the garage door/gate or control lighting from the MyQ App or MyQ web page.
• You will not be able to accurately see the opened/closed status of your garage door or gate.
• You will not receive any alerts during this time.

Q: For the life of me I can't figure out how to open my remote to change the battery. Any tips? - Diane

   

A: It may seem like a silly question but it is in fact a very good (and common) question. If you have an older (15 - 20 year old) remote then this usually isn't a problem. Most of the older remotes had a screw that you could remove or a small piece that you could slide to get to the battery compartment. This is not the case in most of the newer remotes. I'm assuming in an effort to save on production costs the remotes are no longer made with a screw or a sliding compartment door. What you'll usually find is the two pieces of the remote are pressure fitted together making it difficult to get to the battery. However on most remotes you'll see a small indentation on the end or side of the battery. Take a dime and put it in that indentation and turn the dime like a key. The two halves of the remote should then come apart giving you access to the battery. Two of the more common batteries you'll find is the 3-Volt Lithium Battery or the 12-Volt Alkaline Battery.

A: That's a very common question Dave. It's all going to depend on what make, model and year of vehicle you have plus what make and model of garage door operator. If the vehicle has the Homelink system (your car owners manual will indicate this) then my best advice is to go to the Homelink website and use their services. You can enter the type of car & opener you have and then you'll see the programming instructions. They also offer videos so you can see how it's done.

A: Thanks for the question Simon. The 877MAX Keyless Entry is a newer Liftmaster product that covers many different model of openers including most of the Raynor operators. As far as the Raynor Corporal opener you can use either the 877MAX Keyless Entry or the 377LM Keyless Entry which is specifically for the 315MHz frequency. Either keyless will work just fine and are easy to program.

Raynor Pilot Opener - Choosing The Right Remote

Do you have a Raynor Pilot (1265RGD/2265RGD/3265RGD) garage door opener? Did you lose your remote? Not sure which remote will work with your opener? Many of the remotes on the market look the same and some claim they'll work with any opener so it can very confusing. Liftmaster #375LM Universal Remote

Liftmaster has introduced a new universal 2-button remote control. You're probably asking yourself - "How does this benefit me?". Well, the best thing about this remote is that you can control two different operators that have two different frequencies (they can also be from different manufacturers). It's the new Liftmaster #375LM Universal 2-Button Remote Control.

Say you have two garage door openers and one of them no longer works and it would be too costly to repair (or parts are no longer available to fix it). So you decide to put a brand new opener in (say a Linear or Liftmaster opener) but you don't want to replace the other operator (why should you - it still works). The only problem is the old opener has an older 310MHz frequency radio receiver on it and the new opener has a 315MHz frequency radio receiver. In the "old days" you would have to have two separate remotes to control both operators but not anymore. Liftmaster developed a single remote that can control two separate radio frequencies. I have to admit when I first saw the programming instructions for the Liftmaster #375LM Remote I was a little shocked - it looked like it was going to be a huge undertaking. It wasn't though. Once I figured out which frequency of openers I wanted to program the other parts of the instructions are pretty much ignored and I followed the instructions for a particular unit. It wasn't difficult.

So there you have it. A unique remote that can solve a few different problems. Weather you need to replace a remote for an old opener or you need a remote that works with both newer and older operators, the Liftmaster #375LM Universal Remote seems to fit the bill.
